With the cost of everything rising these days, it is becoming the norm to cut corners  wherever possible. One area people can cut cost is to learn how to cut their own hair. Most men have get their hair cut about once a month. Costing them anywhere between $10.00 to $40.00 bucks. Now with all the different hairstyles for women, haircuts  can range from about  $25.00 to well into the hundreds of dollars not to mention the cost for products. Most people, Are not professionally trained to cut and are a little unsure how to even go about cutting hair. Let alone their own. But what I am here to share with you is with a little practice and know how,  you to can learn how to cut your own hair at home. Once you see how easy it is to master this skill, everyone will think you went out and had your hair professionally done!

The first thing to do is get the correct tools: a pair of hair cutting scissors, a couple of combs, some hair clips, electric clippers, and a spray bottle with water. You need a hand-held mirror, a wall mirror and standing mirror (or two standing mirrors are fine), and preferably, a friend or family member standing by to help you out the first time.

Second, decide on the type of cut you want. The very first time you attempt to cut your own hair, be conservative; don’t go for a difficult, begin by only cutting a inch or less off, you can always cut more off later. If your hair is already pretty short, then just cut very little at first until you get more comfortable with cutting. Go ahead and set up a couple of mirrors at an angle so you can see the back of your head. Look at front back and sides of your hair and pull out a few different strands to see how long they are. Decide how much you want to cut and just cut a little less at first. Practice combing and separating hair just in the reflection of the mirror, where everything will be backward. Sometimes this is confusing at first.

Third, wash your hair and comb it straight. The wetter your hair, the easier it is to cut. It also helps to have some sort of conditioner in the hair so it will be soft and easy to work with. Having your water bottle close by to wet your hair to help control it while your combing and cutting. When your hair starts to dry just give your hair a lite spray.

Fourth, you can begin cutting. start with sectioning your hair into 4 sections. Use your hair clips to keep back any hair that might fall where you are trying to cut. Comb the sections straight out from your head for men’s and layered cuts. Just hold the hair between your index and middle finger. The section of hair you have between your fingers should now look  flat as you hold them between your fingers. Go ahead and sliding your fingers down the hair to the ends of the hair until just  the amount of hair you want to cut is showing; go ahead and cut across the hair, just above or below your fingers, depending on the direction you hand is. Then comb the section out again and check to make sure the cut is even. Then just move onto the next section and repeat.

Now every so often let the hair down from the clips and check to make sure that sides are even. One way to make sure is to grab pieces of hair from both sides of your head in exactly the same spot, and bring the ends together. If they touch evenly, then you have cut your hair the same length on both sides. If not, you will see how much straightening you need to do.

For men’s hair,  using the clippers can be much easier to use then scissors. Attempting  to cut multi-layered men’s hair with scissors and an mirror can be done, but you may want to have a little practice first before it can be done well. The principle is the same as longer hair, other then you wont need to section the hair with clips. Keep the hair wet and comb it straight before measuring the layers and deciding how much to cut off. As with longer hair, be conservative to allow for mistakes. If using electric clippers, It is better to cut the hair dry. and the clipper blade can either catch the hair or not cut evenly.

Now with a little practice, you can learn to cut you own hair and save some big money just by cutting your hair at home. Just take your time and check your work as you go. Soon, you will find that friends and neighbors are asking you to cut their hair too!
